Better Bike Social launches
Architect Joe Morris is launching Better Bike Social, a not-for-profit "cultural programme" exploring aspects of cycling from pedestrian- and bicycle-prioritised city planning, to bicycle mechanics and repair techniques, plus cycling adventure stories, organised urban and rural rides and tours and more.
"I am really aiming for the festival to lift awareness of the many different strands in which the bike is being used to make life better," Morris said. Content will be "uplifting, engaging, thought provoking, dynamic, far reaching, reflective, provocative, and paving a way for a more empathic world of fairness, climate awareness and social justice".
Events take place at Morris' Plant Hub vegan restaurant in Dalston, London. The first programme runs from 30 January to 4 February, with events each night from 6:30pm to 9:30 or 10.00pm weekdays, all-day on Saturday 3rd and a half-day on Sunday 4th. Sessions will include self-build bike projects, open mic debates, roundtable discussions, cycle art exhibitions and movie showings.
Velocity is a launch partner for Better Bikes Social, which begins with an evening of talks by "amazing people and organisations who are championing the bike", including Sarah Featherstone and Judith Sykes of the brilliantly-named VeloCity Placemaking team that "created a strategic vision that could solve the most critical issues facing the countryside today, the winning proposal for the national Infrastructure Commission's Ideas Competition".
